Day trip to Slovenia

That’s the great thing about Europe – less than 2 hours drive and you can be in another country!

Today we set off from Udine to cross the border into Slovenia.

After no border checks 😳 we were in.

Temperatures started dropping quickly in the Slovenian side and soon we were driving g through the first snow we’ve seen this trip , so there was much excitement.

Countryside looked pretty – lots of rolling green hills and little tidy looking villages .

Arrived in Ljubljana just after 10 – wow what a place ! Such beautiful architecture – much more Eastern European .

Started out with luxury pastries and coffee at Zdedsk ( the Brunnetti of Ljub’) then explored the 2 main squares in the old town , the river and the famous “Triple Bridge” . Lots of cute shops , although some of the fashion screaming Eastern Europe 80s.

Walked in to find the Central Market – not many stalls out on this cold Monday but what was there was an explosion of colour – especially the berries.

We the took …yes… another funicular up to the Ljubljana Castle, beautiful restored we spent a while looking around and enjoying the view out over the city despite the freezing cold and snowflakes!

After a look at St Nicholas cathedral we headed for lunch at a traditional restaurant that has apparently been operating since 1776!

A very very hearty lunch of Carnolian sausages, sauerkraut, dumplings, veal stew and BEAR goulash !!!!

Started the trip home around 4 pm when it started to get dark – great day exploring somewhere new.

The kids found the different language a novelty – especially the apparent lack of vowels! 😆
